Cognition

Cognitive-communication therapy assists adults who experience difficulties in the communicative or cognitive processes, some including: attention, memory, thinking, reasoning, language, and interpersonal communication. These impairments can result following a traumatic brain injury, stroke, or neurological conditions such as Dementia, Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson’s Disease, or brain tumor. These changes can impact how a person manages daily tasks and connects with others. Each person is different.

Here are common cognitive function difficulties:

  • Executive Functioning

    —Difficulty starting/doing a task

    —Trouble organizing steps to complete a project 

    —Over- or underestimating problems/abilities

    —Deficits in problem solving and reasoning

    —Difficulty making decisions

  • Memory

    Difficulty remembering immediate information for following directions or in a conversation 

    —Asking repetitive questions

    —Changes in the ability to form new memories

    —Trouble remembering how to do something

    —Difficulty remembering to do something at a certain time

  • Attention

    A decreased ability to keep paying attention

    —Easily distracted by background noises

    —Difficulty multitasking (Example: Following a recipe while also having a different conversation).

  • Social Cognition

    —Not providing correct information to a response

    —Not giving the right amount of information - either too short, or too much

    —Not picking up on the nonverbal cues of others (Example: Someone trying to move away and end the conversation)

    —Not making eye contact or facial expressions that are expected (Example: Not smiling and head down while greeting someone)

    —Not explaining things in a way that is easy to follow

    —Not understanding jokes or sarcasm

    —Not able to select a topic or maintain conversation

  • Language

    —A decreased ability to process abstract language

    —Difficulty finding the right words to express your ideas

  • Visuospatial Skills

    —Ignoring one half of the visual space

    —Not making eye contact with someone on the affected side

    —Not eating food on part of the plate because it’s not attended to

    —Bumping into walls because they aren’t noticed

    —Reading words on only one side of the page - not able to scan the full line

    —Not being aware of any changes in visual perception

Brain neuroplasticity makes improvement in life participation with communication disorders achievable. Brains are captivating! Even when brain damage has occurred, brains can create new neuron connections and strengthen old and new pathways.

Speech therapy will concentrate on maximizing brain neuroplasticity so that positive changes in the brain can take place allowing easier participation in meaningful, daily activities.
